Gregg is the son of Joseph and Dolores Berhalter. His birthplace is in Englewood, New Jersey, where he was born on 1st August 1973. Gregg grew up with his two brothers, Jay and Kristin Berhalter.

Gregg graduated from the Benedict’s Preparatory High School in New Jersey and eventually completed his college education from the University of North Carolina in 1991. As a child, Gregg liked to play baseball and basketball. From the age of 12, his interests shifted towards professional soccer.
In spite of sporting an athletic height of 6 feet 1 inch (1.86 metres), Gregg had to work exceptionally hard to physically prepare for a soccer career. He received his motivation from his supportive parents.

Gregg’s first career opportunity came in 1993, playing for the Raleigh Flyers of the USL. Within the same year, Gregg also led the national men’s team of USA at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia as a captain.
