Mike Holmes Bio: Age, Early Life
Michael James Holmes was born on 3rd August 1963 at Halton Hills, Ontario. He started learning the craft of renovation at the age of six. He helped to redecorate the second floor of his family’s home. Holmes grew up in a simple middle-class family with a three-bedroom space at the east corner of Toronto. His father was Jim and mother was Shirley. Being the second child of the three children, Mike had to share a room with his younger brother. His sister used to have her own room though. But sharing a room was not Mike’s thing. Eventually, he got bored with not having his own space and therefore made an effort to renovate his closet into a bedroom. His father happily allowed this room makeover for a year.
At the age of 12, under his father’s instruction, he decorated his uncle’s basement. He did complete the electrical work, stairs, plumbing and everything else. Mike went to record describing his family as a working-class family. Therefore he learned and understood the need for doing things right for the first time. That helped him to grow as a successful contractor and renovator.
However, this creative soul never had an interest in studies. He was pretty odd with authorities and often got bashed by his teachers. Mike attended East York Collegiate Institute. Eventually, he dropped his studies in grade 11.
Mike Holmes Is Married To Wife Alexandra Lorex
Mike Holmes was different. He had his first marriage at the age of 19. The girl he got married to was named Alexandra Lorex. They have three children, Sherry Holmes, Amanda Holmes, and Mike Holmes Jr. He then started his own contracting company with 13 employees. His early business card names, “The F-up Fixer”. Eventually, the family grew bigger. Responsibilities fell higher. The 1990s saw a sea change in the world economy. There was a recession. It was turning harder to sustain and Mike’s company went bankrupt. Such a dire situation affected his personal relations too. At the age of 30, Mike and his wife got divorced, followed by his father’s death. A few years after that, his mother expired at the age of 56.
In 2006, Mike Holmes started “The Holmes Foundation” seeing a poorly done renovation. This is when he realized the necessity of doing building renovations in the right way. He started scratching the surface. He started repairing the damaged homes as well. That same year Mike got recognized in Canada’s House of Commons for making a contribution to building standard improvement. The Holmes Foundation aims at teaching young people to venture into building trades. Holmes works with SOS Children Villages too.

Mike’s ruling years in the television started off in 2001 with Holmes on Homes broadcast on HGTV Canada. The show was conceived with the latest home renovation ideas and earned great public support during its several seasons. The next ventures of Mike Holmes that happened soon after he had earned fame were few of his notable television works. Holmes in New Orleans, Holmes Inspection (2009), Best of Holmes on Homes (2012), Holmes Makes It Right (2012), Mike’s Ultimate Garage (2014), Holmes and Holmes (2016), Holmes: But It Right (2016), Holmes Makes It Right: Retooled (2019), Holmes 911 (2019) are to name some.
Besides, he did television appearances as judge of Handyman Superstar Challenge, American Handyman and Canada’s Handyman Challenge. He again appeared as a guest star on Home to Win and Ellen, Corner Gas series.

Mike has been praised for his contribution to building trades since the initial days. He won the Gemini Awards twice in 2004 and 2009 for best acts at home renovation series.
On February 21, 2008, Mike as awarded with Honorary Doctorate of Technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. On July 18, 2012, Mike received Queen Elizabeth II, Diamond Jubilee Medal.
