Benicio Monserrate Rafael del Toro Sánchez was born on February 19, 1967 in San Germán, Puerto Rico. He spent his formative years in a barrio in Santurce, San Juan. He attended The Academy of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Academia del Perpetuo Socorro), a catholic school in Miramar.
At the age of 15, his family moved to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. He joined the Mercersburg Academy before heading off to the University of California in San Diego to pursue a business degree.
He dropped out of college to study elective drama courses under Stella Adler and Authur Mendoza. He later moved to New York to further his acting and drama education at the Circle in the Square School.
