Lynn is the daughter of African-American parents, Valerian Smith and Jean Butler. Lynn’s father was a dentist and theater actor. She was raised amongst her three other siblings, younger sisters Kimberlegh Butler-Smith and Shawne Langston and younger brother, Valerian Butler-Smith. Lynn’s birthplace is Baton Rouge in Louisiana, where she was born on the 6th of May, 1953.

Lynn began her acting career with the Black Repertory Company in Washington D.C. and eventually went on to do Broadway shows such as The Great Macdaddy, Showdown and For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Her passion for acting was inspired by her father who was an active participant at the local theatre.

Lynn’s first marriage was to Vantile Whitfield, a playwright, director and actor by profession. Lynn was not the first woman in Vantile’s life. His earlier marriages were with Barbara Ann Grant and Barbara Ellen Cobbs.

Vantile and Lynn tied the knots in 1974 and lived with each other for a span of four years. Following their divorce, Vantile went on to marry his final wife, Loretta Collins Argrett.

In 1990, Lynn married for a second time and this time the relationship lasted for her a brief two years. Lynn’s second husband was Brian Gibson, with whom she has a beautiful daughter named Grace Gibson.

After her second divorce, Lynn devoted herself to being a doting mother to her only child, Grace, who is now 27.
