Carroll Diahann Johnson was an award-winning American television and stage actress, model, activist and successful entrepreneur who was born on July 17, 1935, in the Bronx, New York. Though she was born in the United States of America but her parents originated from Africa which made her to be of mixed ethnicity i.e. Afro-American. Carroll came into limelight and became a bona fide celebrity in 1968 when she debut in Julia, the first series on American television to star a Black woman in a non-stereotypical role.

Diahann Carroll was born on July 17, 1935, in Bronx, New York City, to John Johnson of Aiken, South Carolina and Mabel Faulk of Bladenboro, North Carolina. When she was an infant, her family moved to Harlem, where she grew up. Her father was a subway conductor and her mother was a nurse. With the help and support of her parents, Carroll attended dancing, singing and modelling classes at a very young age. When she was 10, she received a Metropolitan Opera Scholarship at Manhattan School of Performing Arts.
While she was 15 years old, , she was a model for “Ebony” magazine. Also, during this time, she auditioned for “Talent Scouts” a radio program anchored by Arthur Godfrey. The success she had in this contest brought her recognition. After completing her education at Manhattan school, she went further to study sociology at New York University. She left before graduating to pursue her show-biz career of which she promised her family to return to college if the career did not materialize after two years.

The first major success Diahann Carroll had was when she participated in the Dumont Television Network Program “Chance of a Lifetime” hosted by Dennis James in 1954 in which she was declared the winner for four weeks. She took home the $1,000 top prize for the rendition of the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein song, “Why Was I born?” Because of her fame in this program, she got job offers from Manhattan’s Café Society Society and Latin Quarter nightclubs.
Also in 1954, she appeared in “The House of Flowers’’. That same year, she also performed for the first time with Dorothy Dandridge in “Carmen Jones”. This was her debut movie for her inception into the movie industry. Carroll started getting many opportunities after her first role and later made appearances in small and big roles as well. In 1962, she was awarded the Tony Award for Lead Actress in a musical. This award was for her work in the production of a musical named “No Strings” where she acted as Babbara Woodruff. It was her first award in the industry and which made her the first Black woman to ever win it.
Carroll was further thrust into limelight and became a celebrity when she was cast as the lead in “Julia” in 1968. She made a number of movies during her career and was nominated for Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in “Claudine” in 1974. Carroll won the Golden Globe Award in 1968 and was later nominated for an Emmy Award for “Julia” in the year 1969. She gained numerous fans and followers and was appreciated by everyone for her dedication and efforts in the industry and she also made many appearances in a TV series which has 74 episodes named “Dynasty”. Carroll also appeared and starred in many other TV series and movies which all contributed to her success in life.

Diahann Carroll was married four times and also divorced four times in her lifetime. Her marriage life has quite a number of issues which was not something she wanted at the end. Her first marriage was with Monte Kay in 1956. They both had a daughter together named Suzanne Kay Bamford. However, they decided to get separated in 1962. In 1973, Carroll married Fred Glusman. This time around, Carroll was the one who filed for divorce on the ground of physical abuse. She married Robert DeLeon in the year 1975 but was widowed two years later when DeLeon died in an auto crash. Her fourth marriage was to singer, Vic Damone in 1987 but they got separated in 1991 and took divorce in 1996.
Diahann Carroll passed away on the 4th of October, 2019, in Los Angeles, California after a protracted battle with Breast Cancer. Jeffery Lane, her publicist, announced her death to the press by herself.
