He started his broadcasting career in Montgomery, Alabama. After his graduation he worked at a number of radio stations in the South and Midwest. His first career started with WVON by doing the morning show, but he left after only three months to work at a competitor firm WBMX-FM. And, He had been hired as a general manager of station WJPC. It was named as “Johnson Publishing Company”, that was owned by John H. Johnson, owner of Jet and Ebony.

He has offered two positions in the firm as an morning show host at KKDA-FM in Dallas and an afternoon show at WGCI-FM in Chicago. Instead of making choices between the two, he choosed both as his job and for eight years. He earned nicknames “The Fly Jock” and “The Hardest Working Man in Radio”. He later told Radio Ink magazine that he racked up 7 million frequent flyer miles over the course of his employment.

He also hosted a national Syndicated program in the ABC Radio Networks. Such morning shows are meant to featuring Joyner and team of comedians and commentators reporting and discussing the latest news and sports of the day. And playing popular songs from the 1970s hits. It also featured celebrity guests, on site remotes and on-air soap opera.

Upon signing a contract extension with Westwood on October 17, 2017, Joyner announced that he would retire at the agreement’s end declaring,

I’m retiring, and for the next two years we’re going to reminisce, remember and talk about all the things that we have actually done for the past 25 years.
