Sharife Cooper is an American basketball player. Sharife was born in June 2001 in Marietta, Georgia in the United States of America. His parents Omar Cooper and Kindall Cooper had three other children; Sharife’s twin, Omar, his sisters Maria and Te’. Sharife stands at 6 feet and weighs about 72 kilograms, perfect for basketball. The 2020 USA Today Sports listed him the 10th out of 25 basketball players to watch. The 19-year-old was a point guard for the McEachern High School and now plays for the Auburn Tigers Men’s Basketball team under Auburn University, which plays in the National Collegiate Athletic Associate (NCAA). He also writes USA Today. He has used this platform to talk about the challenges he faces as a young basketball player.

Sharife comes from a family of sportsmen. His sister Te’ played for the Atlanta Tipoff Club as a point guard. She played with this team in the USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship in 2014. In 2015, she played for the American National Team in the USA Basketball Women’s U19 Championship. His twin, Omar also plays for the Walker School in Georgia. When asked about his family, Sherife said, “We’re real similar, me and my sister and my dad…They’re real down to earth but serious at their craft”.

His combination of speed, skill, IQ and competitiveness is what has pushed him to the heights he is reaching in his career. This is what his coach Mike Thompson had to say about him, “He’s never been one where you see any kind of emotion…He rarely shows it in a game, but his competitiveness, he just hates to lose”.

Sharife Cooper’s career took off at a good young age. At the beginning, he was just a supportive brother in middle school watching his elder sister play at basketball matches. He however developed a passion for the game somewhere along the way. He was as good at his academics as he was at the court. The young man was an honours student at McEachern.

He is a very passionate and dedicated player to the game. In his 8th grade, his coach Thompson threw the ball in his court, quite literally, and said, “Next year, I’m turning this thing over to you. You’re going to be the guy for the next four years”.

Fast forward, in his first year, 2016/2017 season, the player scored 16 points per game taking his McEachern team to a record 29-1 win. The team went on to play in the semi-finals organized by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). In 2017, he beat a fellow American basketball player 42 points, making another record.

He scored 20 points per game in the Nike EYBL under 17 division and took his team to number one in that season. By the end of the 2018/2019 season, he had scored 200 points, which is quite admirable for a player his age. He led his McEachern team to a record 32-0 win, averaging 27.2 points, taking his team to position one in the national polls. At the end of the season, USA Today named Sharife Cooper the ‘All USA Player of the Year’, ‘Naismith Prep Player of the Year, ‘Mr. Georgia Basketball’ and he also received the ‘Gatorade Player of the Year Award’.

When Sharife took part in the draft ESPN College student recruitment, he got a five-star rating and 93 points for his performance throughout the seasons. Many college teams approached him wanting him to play for their teams.

The 19-year-old took the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at tournaments such as the ‘Tournament of Champions’ and the ‘City of Palms Classic’ that is held annually in Florida. Early this year, he was chosen to play in the ‘2020 McDonald’s All American Boys Game’ in Houston.
