Roger Federer is a pro tennis player. He was born on 8 August 1981 in Basel Switzerland but grew up in Birsfelden, Riehen before moving to Munchenstein. He has undergone compulsory military service as per law to every swiss male citizen.
This was cut short when he was shifted to the Civil protection force after being ruled as unsuitable for military service. Not much is known about his earlier childhood life, only that he participated in a lot of sporting activities before dropping out of school at 16.

His first win was in the 1998 Wimbledon competition where he and his teammate Olivier Ronchus played against Michael Llodra and Andy Ram and won. He went on to win against Irakli Labadze in the singles finals. In the same year, he got into the US Open Junior finals but lost to David Nalbandian.
His other junior tournaments include the ITF junior singles tournament which he won four times. The Orange bowl where he lost to Coria Guillermo and later on went to be crowned as ITF junior World champion after being ranked number 1 in the 1998 junior world ranking.
His professional career started in 1998 in Gstaad losing in the 1st round to Luca Arnold Ker. His first finals as a professional tennis player was in the 2000 Marseille Open losing to Marc Rosset.
His winning streak started in 2001 where he won the Hopman Cup. He played alongside Martina Hingis defeating the American duo Monica Seles and Ha Michael Gambill.
In the same year, he had his first singles win defeating Julien Boutter in the Milan Indoor tournament. 2001 became his best year after he beat Pete Sampras, the four-time defending champion, at the Wimbledon Championship. But then lost the quarterfinals against Tim Henman. This match came to launch his career internationally.
He went on to play in major leagues that got him recognized. His career was threatened after he got ill in 2008. He had contracted mononucleosis (the kissing disease) which is an infection caused by the Epstein Barr virus that causes the swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck.
He suffered the illness during the first half of the year. After recovering, Federer went on to play in the Olympic games winning a gold medal after teaming up with Stan Wawrinka beating Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson. Towards the end of the year, he suffered a back injury.
Although he did heal of it, the back injury resurfaced again in 2013. This led to him losing at the Grand Slam tournament and dropping out of the top 4 rankings. Not forgetting about his 2016 knee surgery and back recovery.
