In the year 1952, Hefner left his job as a copywriter for Esquire after the owner denied him a raise of $5.
Hefner was arrested on June 4, 1963, for promoting obscene pictures after an edition of his Playboy magazine published nude shots of Jayne Mansfield in bed along with a man present. The case went to trial but resulted in a hung jury and no decision was procured at the end of the trial.

He married Mildred (“Millie”) Williams who was a Northwestern University student in 1949, and they had a daughter named Christie who was born in 1952 and a son named David who was born in 1955. In 2006 a story profile in E! True Hollywood written about Hefner revealed that Mildred his wife allowed him to have sex with other women, out of her guilt for her infidelity. As she wanted to save her marriage, but eventually they got divorced in the year 1959.
Hefner is believed to have dated as many as seven women concurrently in his life. He has also dated some of the renowned names from the industry such as Brande Roderick, Tina Marie Jordan, Izabella St. James, Holly Madison, Kendra Wilkinson, and Bridget Marquardt.
