According to ESPN.com, he was ranked as No. 23 while 247Sports.com ranked him as No. 89 nationally and No. 13 wide receiver. Thus, he got scholarship offers from various universities such as Auburn, Miami, Virginia Tech but chose Florida State University over the others. In 2011, Benjamin was redshirted but, in 2012, played all 14 games in which he recorded 4 touchdowns and 30 receptions for 495 yards. Next year, he had 15 touchdowns and 54 receptions for 1,011 yards. This included the victorious touchdown in the BCS title game with 13 seconds remaining against Auburn. Benjamin was selected to the All-ACC Third Team by the media, All-ACC Second Team by the coaches, and All-American First Team by Sports Illustrated. After the sophomore season, he decided to forfeit his last 2 years of eligibility to enter the 2014 NFL Draft. Despite this, he was given a first-round grade by NFL Draft Advisory Board and was amply considered, in the 2014 NFL Draft, as one of the top wide receivers. Due to his flair, many scouts reckoned Benjamin as the first-round pick while others were concerned about his hands and lack of route running.

With the 28th pick of the first round, he was subsequently selected by the Carolina Panthers signing a $7.66 million 4-year deal. His debut performance was against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in 2014, in which he recorded 1 touchdown and 6 receptions for 92 yards. For his first week’s performance, Benjamin was voted Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. After scoring exceptionally well in simultaneous games, he became one of the only 2 rookies to gain 300 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in 30 years and was announced as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month of September. 2015 didn’t prove to be fortunate for Kelvin Benjamin as he tore his ACL in a practice session and couldn’t play the season. However, he returned in the 2016 season opener game and performed outstandingly. The Panthers then traded Benjamin to Buffalo Bills in 2017 and recorded 1 touchdown along with 23 receptions for 354 yards in 12 games.

Commentators and fans claimed that Benjamin’s progress had declined and this could probably be due to his knee injuries. Eventually, in 2018, Benjamin was released by the Bills and inked a 1-year deal with Kansas City Chiefs. In three regular-season games, he made only 2 catches and did not appear in the team’s playoff games. He hasn’t played football since.
