Michael initiated his career when he played in the Gordon Head Baseball Association in Canada and was a team member of Canada at the 1999 Little League World Series. While he was in high school, he played baseball for the Victoria Mariners of the British Columbia Premier Baseball League and also, for the Tallahassee Community College later.
Then, he was designated by the professional team Seattle Mariners in the 2004 Major League Baseball draft. In the season of the year 2005, Michael hit .270 with 39 runs batted in (RBI) and 7 home runs.
