Roberts had been fascinated by television newscast and harboured this ambition of becoming a newscaster. She could visualize herself in New York City though she had never been there. Her family was impoverished, but she still saw herself there. During her University study time, she spent her summers off interning at a television station in Macon and for a local Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) affiliate as well.
Right after University, she was hired as a news reporter, and correspondent at WTVM-TV, a TV station in Columbia and right then her family thought she was a star feeling she had achieved her dream. They were delighted seeing her on TV. After two years at the WTVM, Roberts moved on to WBIR TV in Knoxville, Tennessee as a general reporter. Three years after that, she had garnered popularity enough to move on to greater heights, and she joined WFTV-TV in Orlando, Florida.
