It was at this period when she met her later to be husband Al Roker when she was tapped to serve as a guest anchor on NBC’s morning news show. Later in the year, NBC started the News magazine Dateline NBC, and Roberts was picked as the reporter for the show. Alongside this, she worked as the substitute anchor for the evening news. She worked for NBC for five years, three being at Dateline NBC.

She moved to ABC as a correspondent for Datelines rival show, 20/20. Here she covered various popular stories, including sexual abuse in the Amish community, the plight of refugees of the Rwandan genocide and manic depression in young children.
