Jewell Loyd Bio, Age, Career, Success, Income, Rio Olympics, Facts

Soaring American basketball star, Jewell Lloyd, has quite literally raised a ‘storm’ in US professional women’s basketball. The dynamic athlete, who plays as a part of the Seattle Storm in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), is definitely a player to watch out for. With her exceptional performance this far, Loyd has given her career an incredible start, being selected by the Seattle Storm as the number one overall in the 2015 WNBA Draft.

Jewell Loyd Career And Success

Loyd’s career has arrived at a good place as she has secured her place among the best athletes of the WNBA. The basketball champion has managed to break several records on her way to the top. One such instance came on May 4, 2016, when the Seattle Storm took on rivals, Phoenix Mercury at KeyArena in Seattle. The epic playoff saw Jewell Loyd score a career-high 32 points in leading the team to a glorious victory. This was the highest since a 33-point record by Lauren Jackson in 2010. She also became one of the few players in Storm’s history, besides Jackson and Sue Bird, to score at least 30 points across multiple games.

Coach Jenny Boucek had only good things to say when asked about the team’s star performer:

She was letting stuff come to her and not forcing it. It wasn’t an individual effort, she was creating for others and just taking things as they came. And if she can keep doing that, then she’s going to reach a whole other level because she showed the ability to be a playmaker and not just a scorer.

When asked to comment on her performance, Loyd herself humbly remarked, “I’m on a mission for sure to get better and prove to myself and my family that I’m a good player”. She also went on to say, “I’m still a young player in the league. I’m not in my prime yet. I’m on the rise and I definitely want to be in the conversation of the top five guards in the league.”

Storm’s Jewell Loyd Helped U.S. Women’s Basketball Team During Rio Olympics

With her WNBA career already at good place, Loyd also has her eyes set on the 2020 Olympics. With the likes of former Olympians Diana Taurasi, Lindsay Whalen and Sue Bird possibly not making it to the 2020 world event, there is a good chance for the young champion to get a selection on the national team.

In taking a step towards this goal, the young basketball champion was named as a part of USA Basketball’s 11-player select team, which was responsible for helping the US national women’s team to prepare for the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The development proved to be satisfactory for Loyd as she commented in an interview,

I’m waiting my turn

And further mentioned,

Being in the pool gets me one step closer to reaching that goal.

With the Rio gold win, Jewell may well be in line for a place in the next Olympics-bound team.

Jewell Loyd In The National Team

Jewell finds herself pushing her limits as she draws closer to her Olympic goal every day. The 23-year-old is eager to prove herself before the likes of Storm stalwarts, Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird as they watch her fearlessly dribble her way through training camp practice. The 5 feet 10 inches tall player is fully aware that with the retirement of 15-year veterans like Sue Bird, new avenues are going to open up for her to explore. However, in her humble manner, she goes on to remark:

Sue is still here and she’s still dominating and I’m not going to mess with anything that’s working. Being the (playmaker) is Sue’s job, and she’s great at it.

Further, she adds:

At times in one-on-one situations or late in the shot clock, the ball is probably going to be in my hands and I get to make a play for me and Stewie and Sue is in the corner. But for the most part, that’s Sue’s job.
