Jaycee Lee Dugard is an American author and a childhood abduction survivor. She was born on May 3, 1980 in Anaheim, California.
At age 11, Jaycee was abducted while at a bus stop in California, USA. Her family, unaware that their daughter was abducted, gave up after a long search that yielded no fruits. She was abducted back in June 1991 by a couple who kept her holed up in a backyard of a Californian home.
Her abductors, Phillip Craig Garrido – a convicted rapist, and Nancy Garrido took her through series of inhuman treatments, such as not being allowed to interact with people or contact her family. The experience of being holed up in a dungeon-like environment took a toll on her, driving her to the height of her depression.
Jaycee Lee Dugard Abduction And Captivity
Jaycee Lee Dugard recounts her ordeal in her interview with Sawyer in 2011 with bated breath. According to Jaycee Lee, her abductor, Philip Garrido, began to rape her soon after her abduction.
By age 14, she had given birth to her first daughter Starlet, fathered by her abductor. It is not surprising why she does not hold a strong grudge against Philip Garrido. While holed up, she was repeatedly molested and ravished, experiences that are kept in a secret journal. At one point she felt that her family had deserted her and was doing nothing to rescue her, a fact that she later discards on learning of how they tried to search for her.
Her life in the dungeon was unbearable, narrates the mother of two. Philip was not remorseful at all and kept on molesting her even when was nursing. “I wasn’t expecting it”, she laments while recounting her past. ” I was pregnant again for the rapist who denied all rights to normal human interaction. My children are brought in an environment of fear and hopelessness, something that haunts me to date”, says Jaycee while being interviewed.
Her life with the rapist has played a significant part in the way Jaycee sees the outer world and especially the male world. “Man is ruthless and heartless, not even when children are involved”.
Jaycee Lee Dugard Escape To Freedom
On several occasions, she had tried to escape but her love for her two daughters would not allow her. She admits that escape with her two daughters would not have been possible since the compound was always under tight surveillance. When she thought about her two lovely children, she would find the strength to continue living, having given up hope of ever gaining her freedom. ‘Starlet and Angel were always my strength’, she admits.
On August 24th, 2009, 18 years after her abduction, Philip’s visit to UC Berkley Campus to ask to stage a religious event landed him in trouble when, on suspicion, a background check was ordered to be done on him. He was forced to attend a parole meeting together with his entire family. It was when his cover was blown off and was arrested and charged with rape and 27 other felony counts. He was convicted and jailed for 431 years while his wife, Nancy got 36 years behind bars. Jaycee feels it is worth it since they kept her in a hole for 18 ugly years!
After Philip and Nancy were arrested, Jaycee Lee and her two daughters were reunited with her mother Terry Probyn. She is now happy, living her life away from the torment of the past. The fact that justice has been done energizes her.
