After dropping out of college in 2000, Devendra started performing in shows, and his first was at a gay wedding in San Francisco. Devendra music is a blend of acoustic folk, psychedelia mostly known as freak folk. Devendra is credited as one of those musicians who brought the freak-folk movement in 2000. The first album to bring Devendra to the world limelight was the “Oh me Oh My” song, which he sang in 2002.
Later in 2000, Devendra moved to Paris, France, and opened shows for rock bands such as Sonic Youth. Devendra did not stay long in France because he moved back to America and played music in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Siobhan Duffy, a wife to Michael Gira, owner of Young God Records, bought a copy of Devendra demo CD The Charles C. Leary.
This made Michael look for Devendra and compiled an album from all his recordings, and in 2002 “Oh me Oh My” song was released. This song was a hit and received positive reviews in the market. He recorded two other albums and an EP album with Michael Gira: “Nino Rojo,” “Rejoicing in the Hands,” and “The Black Babies.” In 2005 Devendra moved to XL recordings and immediately released “Cripple Crow,” recorded in New York.
Devendra collaborated with Antony and the Johnsons band New York and produced the “I Am a Bird Now” album. The album won the Mercury Award in September 2005 and sold more than 200,000 copies in the United Kingdom. He also made a guest appearance in the production of “Spiraling” and ‘You are my sister. “
Devendra recorded the second album with XL records “Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon,” released on September 25, 2007. The album featured more instrumentation than his previous albums and did well on the billboard.
In 2008 Devendra collaborated again with Gregory Rogove and Fabrizio Moretti and released another album entitled “Surfing.” In 2009 he was signed to Warner and Reprise and released What Will We Be”, a remix of “Oasis High Horse Lady” and “Neighbors.” In the same year, Devendra performed at Coachella Festival.

Devendra designed T-shirt for the yellow bird project and chose to donate proceeds from the t-shirt sale to fight teenage cancer trust the United Kingdom.
Devendra has also been involved in several films like “Arkansas,” “Aladdin,” and “Joshy,” where he has taken up roles.
