An American lawyer and politician, Kamala Devi Harris is serving as the Junior United States Senator from California since 2017. She is a Presidential candidate for the upcoming US Elections 2020. Kamala Harris Career Details
She is a Howard University and University of California’s graduate. She studied in the Hastings College of the Law under the University of California. She was working in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office in the 1990s, along with being employed at the City Attorney of San Francisco’s Office. It was in 2004 that her hard work paid off well and she was elected as the District Attorney of San Francisco.
From this time onwards, she got wide recognition for her work and thus, got elected as the Attorney General of California in 2010 and further won the same election again in 2014 too, by a wide margin. 2016 was the year when she had to her name the position of California’s third female US Senator, defeating Loretta Sanchez. Moreover, she became the first ever female US Senator to be of Jamaican or Indian descent.
While working in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office as a deputy district attorney, she specialised in cases pertaining to child sexual abuse. She felt that these were such trials with a difficult nature because the juries have a tendency to believe the word of an adult over that of a child. Meanwhile, she also taught the skills of advocacy at Stanford University and University of San Francisco.
She entered the arena of her political career thanks to its introduction by the then-California Assembly Speaker, Willie Brown, whom she dated then.
She was later appointed as the District Attorney in the San Francisco District Attorney, where she supervised five other attorneys under her. She majorly worked on criminal cases, prosecuting homicide, burglary, robbery, sexual assault cases and alike.
She also has to her name the credit of establishing a special Unit for Hate Crimes, which had the ultimate focus on hate crimes against LGBT children and teens studying in schools. A conference called ‘gay-transgender panic defence’ had previously been used to justify the violent hate cries against the community. Harris also convened a conference at the national level in order to confront the unjustified nature of such actions. Moreover, she has been against both Proposition 22 and Proposition 8, while favouring same-sec marriage in California.

Such efforts of her led to The National Urban League honouring her as a ‘Woman of Power’ in the year 2014. She was also honoured with the Thurgood Marshall Award, which is given by the National Black Prosecutor’s Association. During her campaign for the Attorney General of California, she became a part of numerous endorsements which included California Legislative Black Caucus, Asian American Action Fund and many more.
She has prosecuted various cases pertaining to a wide variety of issues such as prison conditions and sentencing reforms, financial crimes, mobile-app user privacy, Michelle-Lael Norsworthy case, that of a transgender woman, misconduct of the County Prosecutors, cases of oil and gas companies and so on.
